Cinema Paradiso Honors Black History
(released
2/7/2007)
By Douglas Lorah
Cinema Paradiso is screening The Highwaymen and Purvis of Overtown on Monday, February 12, 2007 beginning at 6:30pm. The screenings are honoring Black History. Both stories are historical accounts of painters.
The Highwaymen were young black men who painted scenes of Florida in the 1960's. Their paintings have been a hot commodity in the art world in recent years.
Purvis of Overtown, which screened last year at the Florida Film Festival, documents the work and life of ex-con Purvis Young as he paints the lives of the people of Overtown, a ghetto in Miami.
General admission is $8, students and seniors are $7 and members of the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival are admitted free.
Cinema Paradiso is located at 503 SE 6th Street in Ft. Lauderdale. For more information, go to www.fliff.com or call (954) 525-FILM (3456).
