Storyteller: I am the smallest planet of my own was one of 15 short films included in Optic Nerve VIII, MOCA's annual festival featuring films by South Florida artists. The film was selected for the museum's collection by MOCA Executive Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater, who announced the selection during the Optic Nerve program on August 18. Hwang's film lyrically combines dreamy animated imagery and a softly sung Korean lullaby and evokes memories of childlike innocence. The film has a running time of two minutes and 30 seconds. MOCA's Optic Nerve program is designed to provide emerging South Florida artists with an important venue in which to show their works. Each year, MOCA solicits an open call to artists for submissions and a panel of experts determines which films will be featured. "For the past two years, the generous support of Starbucks Coffee Company has made it possible for MOCA to purchase work by South Florida artists," noted Bonnie Clearwater in a prepared statement. "Jiae's film makes a wonderful addition to the museum's collection, and helps us fulfill our mission to collect and present works by emerging South Florida artists." Audience members at the two Optic Nerve screenings on August 18 were invited to submit their votes for MOCA's first annual "Audience Choice" Award. The recipient of this year's Audience Choice award is Matthew Cox's short film, I Forgot My Name, which uses a stop-motion puppet and animation to confront the loss of self that accompanies Alzheimer's Disease. The films by Hwang and Cox will be screened at MOCA at Goldman Warehouse on Saturday, September 9 during the museum's opening preview for the exhibition Christian Holstad: The Terms of Endearment.
