ONCE THERE WAS A COUNTRY: REVISITING HAITI
a special screening and seminar, June 22

With Haitian Heritage Month winding down, the Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archive continues the festivities through June with a series of screenings featuring vintage film and video on Haiti and the Haitian experience in South Florida.

Haiti has had a tumultuous history since Christopher Columbus first landed on Hispaniola in 1492 and claimed the island for Spain, which later controlled only the Santo Domingo half of the colony.  After being occupied by France since 1697, Haiti became independent in 1804 following a slave rebellion.  Since then, Haiti has experienced a series of political setbacks and advancements as it struggled for democracy and a better way of life for its people.  From the mid-1950s through the 1980s, this history and its impact on South Florida was captured by local Miami television news stations on film and video housed in the Wolfson Archive.

"This is the first time we're doing a series focusing solely on Haiti, so it's a great opportunity for the public to see the original news coverage," said Wolfson Archive manager Lou Ellen Kramer.

ONCE THERE WAS A COUNTRY: REVISITING HAITI (2004)

This look at Haiti's failing healthcare infrastructure was produced by a group of Miami-based filmmakers.  Director Kimberly Green explores Haiti through the tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS treatments of Sonson and LaRochelle as they navigate through a new health initiative over a six-month period.  With footage from the Wolfson Archive, this documentary traces the degradation of Haiti and the attempts to alleviate the rampant poverty.   Director Kimberly Green and production manager/consultant Ellen Powers will discuss the documentary and answer questions following the screening. The documentary was co-produced by Rhonda Mitrani (editor/co-producer) and Juan Carlos Zaldivar (co-writer/co-producer).
