MDPL Continues Free Film Series

On Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m., the Miami Design Preservation League presents a free screening of the 1975 film classic Brother, Can You
Spare a Dime? The screening is open to the public and takes place at the Art Deco Welcome Center Auditorium — 1001 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. RSVP's are recommended by calling 305-674-1736.
Written and directed by Philippe Mora, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? has no narration, but an array of original material ranging from
newsreel footage to clips from Hollywood films. It captures not only the history but also the culture of the Depression, from the stock market crash through Pearl Harbor, from dance marathons to heavyweight fights. Footage includes They Made Me a Criminal, Public Enemy, Gold Diggers of 1933, Employee's Entrance, Little Caesar, Lady Killer, I Was a Fugitive from a Chain Gang and other Hollywood films from the time.
The film spotlights a cast list of familiar names appearing in archival footage, including the Andrews Sisters, Cab Calloway, Woody Guthrie,
Billie Holiday, Ruby Keeler, Huey Long, Joe Louis, the Marx Brothers, Paul Robeson, Shirley Temple, and Orson Welles.
