Psycho-analyzing Deepa Mehta's Water
(released
2/7/2008)
By greenroomwire
On Friday, February 22 at 7:30pm, Culture in the City will co-host an event with the Florida Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. They will be screening Water by Deepa Mehta as part of the "Psycho-analyzing the Movie" series.
Water, the superb conclusion of the "trilogy of the elements," tells the story about the lives of a group of widows (one just eight years old), who are ostracized by tradition (and by families who don't want to support them) to a special ashram on the Ganges. A film that is serene on the surface yet roiling underneath, it neatly parallels these women's oppression by cruel ancient customs to India's subjugation under British colonialism.
The event is free and will be held at Bayside Pavillion at Mercy Hospital at 3663 S. Miami Avenue in the Grove. The film is rated PG-13 with English subtitles. There will be complimentary Indian snacks at 7pm.
