Premiere of Doc made in the Grove
(originally released on 9/29/2005)

Coconut Grove will play host as well as star in the world premiere screening of "Don't Box Me In: A Coconut Grove Story." The premiere will actually have two screenings, so take your pick.

Friday, October 7, 2005 at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM

The event will take place at the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove at 2985 South Bayshore Drive. Admission is free.

A little Background

This documentary was produced, written, directed, shot and edited by Richard Fendelman, Expect A Miracle Productions. It is a chronicle of the effort and unity of the residents of Coconut Grove, Florida, to keep Home Depot out of their picturesque, waterfront village.

"My goal," said Fendelman, "is to offer an accurate synopsis of what happened when the Grove first heard about Home Depot's intentions, how the movement against it developed, and how the interaction between the public and local government progressed."

"Don't Box Me In: A Coconut Grove Story," features footage from public meetings as well as interviews with Grove residents and activists. Admission to the premier is free. Everyone who attends will receive a free copy of The DVD as a public service and it will be made available nationally to help other communities with their 'big box' fights.

Special guest, Al Norman, author of "Slam-Dunking Wal-Mart" will be the guest speaker at this event. Mr. Norman, founder of the Boston organization 'Sprawl Busters', is an expert in helping communities fighting Wal-Mart and other big boxes nationally.

Richard Fendelman and his brother James are well known as the Fabulous Flying Fendelman Brothers, who owned and operated the Grove Art Cinema from 1973 until 1989. Richard went on to become a well-known location scout/manager. He established Expect A Miracle Productions in 1995 and has been involved in production as a writer, producer, director, cameraman, editor and animator.

This is sure to be one of those down-home groovy Grove events. The open invitation says, "Dress as your favorite movie star... or wear black tie and shorts... or whatever suits your fancy, but come!"
